Advanced 3-D Modeling
Fall 2020
Process Experiment

This project was a study and adaptation of the process of making akari lamps. These paper lights, though common, were made famous by Isamu Noguchi’s large scale designs and installations.

These lamps are handcrafted meticulously using a collapsible wood mold, glue, bamboo rods, and washi paper. The shape of the lantern originates from the the design of the mold. I wanted to reverse the design process by deciding the lamps shape first through CAD modeling and using it to create the mold.

Though the mold was made through computer modeling and laser cutting, the final construction of the lamp mimics the original craft.
